Wang Yi: The Release of Proclamation on the Termination of War on the Korean Peninsula Conforms to the Progressing Trend of the Times
2018/08/03

On the afternoon of August 2, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a briefing for Chinese and foreign media after his attendance at the China-Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Singapore. A journalist of the Republic of Korea (ROK) asked Wang Yi's views on the wish of the ROK and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to promote the release of proclamation on the termination of war on the Korean Peninsula as well as the negotiation and signing of the peace agreement.

Wang Yi expressed that both the ROK and the DPRK on the Korean Peninsula, which belong to the same ethnic group and share the same blood, do not want another war. It is a reasonable and justifiable wish and demand. At the same time, we do not believe that other countries including the United States are willing to provoke a war again on the Korean Peninsula. The proclamation on the termination of war could be released if everyone does not wish to start a war again, which complies with the progressing trend of the times and the common wish of people from all countries including the ROK and the DPRK on the Korean Peninsula.

Wang Yi noted that it is another case to transform the agreement of the termination of war into the peace agreement. It takes time for relevant parties to sit down, start negotiation again, and go through necessary legal procedure. All parties, especially the ROK and the DPRK on the Korean Peninsula, should be encouraged and supported for their willingness to make efforts to this end.
