Wang Yi Meets with Foreign Ministers of the Quartet of the CELAC and Chile
2018/01/22

On the afternoon of January 21, 2018 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Santiago with Foreign Ministers of the Quartet of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and Chile.

Wang Yi pointed out that the collective rise of emerging market and developing countries is a general trend of the development of today's world. The establishment of China-CELAC Forum is conducive to reinforcing the cooperation between China and Latin American and Caribbean countries, conforms to the demands of both sides and complies with the general trend of the world. Since the establishment of China-CELAC Forum three years ago, all-round progress has been made, which injected fresh impetus into and provided a new platform for the development of Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Wang Yi expressed that China hopes three major goals will be realized at the upcoming Second Ministerial Meeting of the China-CELAC Forum. The first is that in light of the instabilities and uncertainties of the international situation, all relevant parties will jointly send out a concerted voice to support multilateralism, free trade and the development of globalization toward an open, inclusive, balanced, universally beneficial and win-win direction. The second is to reach important consensus on deepening cooperation under the "Belt and Road" framework. The "Belt and Road", an international cooperation initiative put forward by President Xi Jinping, adheres to the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits and aims to align the development strategies of various countries and tap potential for mutually beneficial cooperation. In the process of the joint construction of the "Belt and Road" by China and various countries, Latin American and Caribbean countries naturally represent an important party and will surely play a significant role. The third is that all relevant parties will help Latin American and Caribbean countries pursue a path of diversified development, improve their self-development capacity, and build independent and competitive pillar industries. In the industrialization process of Latin American and Caribbean countries, China will become their most reliable and ideal cooperative partner.

The representative of Foreign Minister of El Salvador, the current rotating presidency of the CELAC; Foreign Minister Miguel Vargas Maldonado of the Dominican Republic, the rotating presidency of the CELAC in 2016; Foreign Minister MarĂa Fernanda Espinosa of Ecuador, the rotating presidency of the CELAC in 2015; Foreign Minister Antonio Rodrigue of Haiti, the rotating presidency of the Caribbean Community, and Foreign Minister Heraldo Munoz of Chile expressed that the CELAC member countries attach high importance to China's international status and influence and feel satisfied with the development of the relations between the CELAC and China in recent years. The China-CELAC Forum has provided an effective platform for both sides to deepen cooperation. Since its establishment three years ago, the cooperation between China and the CELAC under the forum has made prominent achievements with fruitful results. Under the joint efforts of both sides, various preparations for the Second Ministerial Meeting of the China-CELAC Forum have been completed. The CELAC is fully confident that the upcoming meeting will reach extensive consensus and achieve a complete success.
