Wang Yi Holds Talks with Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif of Pakistan

On September 8, 2017, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks in Beijing with visiting Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif of Pakistan.

Wang Yi said that China and Pakistan are all-weather strategic cooperative partners. China-Pakistan friendship has received support from the two peoples' hearts, with solid public opinion foundation. No matter how the international and regional situation changes, the mutual trust between China and Pakistan remains unbreakable. No matter how domestic situations of the two countries change, the friendship between China and Pakistan is as stable as always. No matter how geopolitical structure adjusts, the cooperation between China and Pakistan enjoys continuous development. China-Pakistan relations showcase strong soundness, stability and persistence, which are not only conducive to both countries, but also increasingly becoming an anchor of regional peace and stability.

Wang Yi said that, China firmly supports Pakistan in defending its sovereignty and national dignity, supports Pakistan on its constant development and growth, and supports the country's efforts in fighting against terrorism and safeguarding national security. China appreciates Pakistan's consistent and firm support on issues concerning China's core interests.

Khawaja Asif said that, the friendship between Pakistan and China enjoys a long history and has stood the test of time, becoming a model of country-to-country relations. Based on equality, mutual trust, and non-interference in internal affairs, Pakistan-China relations have not only mechanism guarantee but also profound supports from the two peoples. The country thanked China for its firm support for Pakistan in safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Pakistan will stand firmly with China as always on the issues of Taiwan, Tibet, Xinjiang, South China Sea and other issues concerning China's core interests.

Khawaja Asif expressed that the Pakistan-China Economic Corridor is a flagship project of the "Belt and Road" initiative, and has made progress in such projects as energy, infrastructure construction and electricity. Pakistan is willing to speed up the construction of the corridor to enrich comprehensive economic cooperation between the two countries. Pakistan is committed to international counter-terrorism, and will continue to fight against the East Turkistan Islamic Movement to safeguard the common security of both countries.

The two sides exchanged in-depth views on the Afghanistan issue. Both sides agreed that to achieve peace and stability in Afghanistan at an early date not only benefits the Afghanistan people, but also conforms to the common interests of both China and Pakistan. Referring to the new US policy on Afghanistan and South Asia, both sides hoped that the policy can help Afghanistan achieve prolonged stability and regional peace and stability, and the policy should also give consideration to reasonable security concerns of countries in the region.

The two sides reiterated that promoting "Afghan-led and Afghan-owned" peaceful reconciliation process is the only solution to the Afghanistan issue. Both China and Pakistan will continue to play a constructive role in upholding and promoting the political reconciliation process in Afghanistan. Both sides agreed to vigorously promote China-Pakistan-Afghanistan trilateral cooperation, and hold the first trilateral meeting of Foreign Ministers of Pakistan, China and Afghanistan at an early date.
