US President Donald Trump Meets with Yang Jiechi

On June 22, 2017 local time, President Donald Trump of the US met at the White House with State Councilor Yang Jiechi, who was in Washington D.C. for the first China-US diplomatic and security dialogue.

Yang Jiechi conveyed President Xi Jinping’s sincere greetings to President Donald Trump. Yang Jiechi expressed that under the guidance of the important consensus reached by the two heads of state at Mar-a-Lago, China-US relations achieved new and important progress recently. Both sides continue to advance exchanges and cooperation in various fields, reach agreement on the early harvest of the 100-day action plan for economic cooperation, and maintain communication and coordination in major international and regional issues. The above mentioned progress has brought tangible benefits to the two peoples. In the next stage, China is willing to, together with the US, uphold the general direction of China-US cooperation, maintain exchanges at high-level and all levels, expand mutually beneficial cooperation, and properly handle and control differences on the basis of mutual respect, so as to push forward China-US relations for sustained, sound, and stable development.

Yang Jiechi noted that the first China-US diplomatic and security dialogue is an important step for the implementation of the consensus of the two heads of state. Both sides believed that this dialogue is constructive and fruitful. Yang Jiechi said that President Xi Jinping expects to meet again with Mr. President at the G20 Hamburg Summit, and welcomed Mr. President’s state visit to China within this year. China stands ready to make joint efforts with the US to ensure the above high-level exchanges to achieve fruitful outcomes.

Donald Trump asked Yang Jiechi to convey his warm greetings to President Xi Jinping. Donald Trump said that he and President Xi Jinping held a successful meeting at Mar-a-Lago, reaching much important consensus. He was glad to see that US-China cooperation in all fields has made positive progress since the meeting. He looked forward to meeting again with President Xi Jinping at the G20 Hamburg Summit and to paying a state visit to China upon President Xi Jinping’s invitation within this year. He hoped to push forward US-China relations for new development through the above high-level exchanges.

Yang Jiechi noted that not long ago, Mr. President assigned the representative of the US government to attend the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, which China was highly gratified with. China is ready to carry out cooperation with the US in the joint construction of the “Belt and Road”. Donald Trump noted that the US is willing to conduct cooperation in relevant projects of the “Belt and Road”.

Both sides also exchanged views on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue and other issues. Donald Trump expressed that the US sides expected to enhance cooperation with China on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue and advance the denuclearization of the Peninsula at an early date. Yang Jiechi reiterated China’s principled stance on the issue, and expressed China’s willingness to continue to maintain communication and coordination with all relevant parties including the US, so as to make efforts in jointly easing the tense situation in the Peninsula and in promoting the proper settlement of the issue.

On the same day, Yang Jiechi also met at the White House with Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs Herbert Raymond McMaster and Senior Advisor to the President Jared Kushner.

Member of Central Military Commission of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and Chief of the Joint Staff Department of the PLA Fang Fenghui and others were present.
