Wang Yi Holds Talks with Chairperson of African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat

On June 21, 2017, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat in Addis Ababa.

Wang Yi said that China and Africa have opened a new era featuring win-win cooperation and common development. Development strategies of China and Africa highly dovetail with each other and both sides enjoy respective complementary advantages and needs, embracing historical cooperation opportunities. China supports the AU in playing a greater role in the process of achieving lasting peace and sustainable development in Africa, and is willing to establish a closer partnership with the new AU Commission.

Wang Yi noted that the Chinese side stands ready to enhance strategic communication and strategic mutual trust with the AU, coordinate to advance a better alignment between China-Africa Ten Major Cooperation Plans and the AU 2063 Agenda, and promote the international community to pay more attention and make more contributions to the cause of Africa's peace and development. Thanking the AU for holding China-Africa high-level dialogue on poverty reduction and development and the think-tank forum with China, Wang Yi expressed that the Chinese side is willing to offer wisdom, share experience and make contributions to Africa's poverty reduction and development.

Wang Yi said that as for the next step, China stands ready to deepen cooperation with the AU in five priority areas to constantly inject new impetus into China-Africa relations, including aligning each other's development strategies and focusing on advancing the full and effective implementation of the outcomes of the Johannesburg Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, carrying out peace and security cooperation to help Africa accelerate the realization of lasting peace and stability, enhancing cooperation in public health to support Africa in strengthening disease control and prevention system as well as capacity building, conducting human resource development and cooperation to cultivate more talents urgently needed in the AU and Africa, and intensifying coordination in international and regional affairs to well safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of China, Africa and developing countries.

Moussa Faki Mahamat expressed that Africa-China cooperation is one of the most dynamic international partnership in the current world, as the two sides enjoy close dialogues and communication and diverse cooperation areas. Africa and China have constantly deepened cooperation in politics, economy, energy, transportation, railway, industry, science, technology and other fields. China helps Africa improve its capacity building in infrastructure, education, disease control and other fields. Both sides remain in close coordination in peaceful development, anti-terrorism, combating transnational crime, coping with climate change and other international affairs, reaching numerous consensus. The African side stands ready to push forward the integration between China-Africa Ten Major Cooperation Plans proposed by President Xi Jinping and the AU 2063 Agenda, and actively carry out cooperation in the three networks and infrastructure industrialization. The AU is willing to make greater contributions to the development of Africa-China relations and deepening bilateral strategic partnership.
