Wang Yi Meets with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov of Russia

On June 18, 2017, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov of Russia, who was in China for the meeting of BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs.

Wang Yi said that China-Russia relations have continuously moved forward at a high level since this year. Both countries enjoy close high-level exchanges. President Xi Jinping and President Vladimir Putin have met twice respectively at the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRF) and the Astana Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, reaching a series of important consensus and leading the development of bilateral relations from a strategic height. Both sides should continuously make joint efforts to well prepare for the recent important high-level exchanges and push forward bilateral cooperation in various fields for more results, so as to inject new impetus into the development of bilateral relations.

Wang Yi stated that both China and Russia are important cooperation partners within the BRICS mechanism. China is willing to, together with Russia, deepen coordination and cooperation, jointly make the first meeting of BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs a success, enhance strategic mutual trust among five countries, synchronously promote works in various fields including politics, security, economy, trade, finance, people-to-people and cultural exchanges as well as mechanism construction, make a common voice on international stage, and make preparation for the BRICS Summit to be held in Xiamen.

Sergey Lavrov said that the development of current Russia-China comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination maintains a sound momentum. President Vladimir Putin successfully attended the BRF in China, reaching new important consensus with President Xi Jinping on comprehensively advancing bilateral cooperation in various fields. Russia is ready to strengthen coordination and cooperation with China, so as to ensure the success of recent major high-level exchanges. The current international situation is full of uncertainties and instabilities, the first meeting of BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs held in China this time is of great significance, which helps BRICS countries, especially Russia and China enhance strategic coordination, and safeguard international relations systems on the basis of the UN Charter and recognized standard of international law, in a bid to facilitate development and prosperity of emerging countries and international and regional peace and stability. The Russian side will actively support the work of China as the BRICS presidency, and jointly push forward the BRICS Summit in Xiamen for a complete success.

Both sides also exchanged in-depth views on Korean Peninsula and other international and regional hotspot issues of common concern.
