Xi Jinping Holds Telephone Talks with President-elect Emmanuel Macron of France

On May 9, 2017, President Xi Jinping held telephone talks with President-elect Emmanuel Macron of France.

Congratulating Emmanuel Macron on his election as President of France, Xi Jinping pointed out that China-France relations, with a profound historical foundation, hold an important position in China's diplomacy. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations 53 years ago, bilateral relations have stood the test of international vicissitudes and increasingly gained strategic significance. It conforms to the common expectation of the two peoples and the international community to elevate bilateral relations to new stages from a new starting point.

Xi Jinping stressed that attaching great importance to France and China-France relations, the Chinese side always considers France as an important and prior cooperation partner, and views the development of bilateral relations from a strategic height and long-term perspective. China is willing to, together with France, carry forward the friendly tradition, enhance strategic mutual trust, earnestly understand and accommodate each other's core interests and major concerns, support each other on major issues, and deepen practical cooperation in various fields. China welcomes France to participate in the "Belt and Road" construction. Both sides should maintain communication and coordination on international and regional issues, continuously advance global governance reform, safeguard the achievements in global governance including the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, and strengthen cooperation within the G20 framework, so as to jointly make contributions to world peace, stability and prosperity. China will continue to support the European integration process.

Emmanuel Macron thanked President Xi Jinping for congratulating him on his election as President of France. France and China enjoy traditional friendship, and at present, bilateral cooperation in various fields has been enjoying sound development. He highly values France-China relations. The new French administration will continuously uphold a positive and friendly policy towards China, adhere to the one-China policy, deepen bilateral practical cooperation in such fields as diplomacy, economy, trade and industry as well as within the "Belt and Road" framework, and continue to intensify communication and coordination in coping with climate change, G20 cooperation and other major international affairs.

Xi Jinping and Emmanuel Macron agreed to maintain contact and meet each other at an early date in a bid to timely exchange views on the development of bilateral relations and issues of common concern.
