Wang Yi's Remarks on Korean Nuclear Issue:Time for Parties to Call for Peace and Reason
2017/04/24

On 23 April, when asked about the situation on the Korean Peninsula during a joint press conference with the foreign minister of Greece, Foreign Minister Wang Yi stressed that with so much said and done to play tough, it is now time to call for peace and reason.

Wang Yi said that China's position on the issue of the Korean Peninsula is clear and consistent, and will not change. China is committed to the denuclearization of the peninsula and the maintenance of peace and stability there. In this context, the nuclear issue on the peninsula must be addressed through peaceful means.

Wang Yi said that China is not at the center of the current tensions and the key to resolving the nuclear issue is not in China's hand. That said, bearing in mind the larger interest of peace on the peninsula and regional stability, China has been working hard to resume peace talks. Most recently, we put forward a reasonable and practical proposal, which is gaining appreciation and support of more and more countries. Should other parties still genuinely want peace, they may very well back up their good will with their own proposals.

Wang Yi stressed that the recent months have seen enough tough words and actions, it is time for us to call for peace and reason. China will not be distracted by different voices, nor will it walk away from its due responsibilities. China will continue its dialogue and consultation with relevant parties, and continue to play a constructive role in resolving the nuclear issue on the peninsula.
