Wang Yi: Jointly Chart China-US Relations for the Next 50 Years with a Historical and Long-term Perspective
2017/03/20

On March 20, 2017, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said at the annual meeting of China Development Forum that, under the new historical background in which the fate of all nations are closely linked, and the interests of emerging and established powers have deeply integrated. If there are conflicts, they will lead to nothing but a lose-lose situation. Therefore China and the US will not step into the Thucydides Trap. The current international affairs are so complex and diverse. It would be impossible for a single country to shoulder the responsibility of providing all international public goods. International cooperation remains as the only feasible solution, which means the relationship between China and the US will not be troubled with the Kindleberger Trap either. China has the confidence to avoid historical precedents through enhancing dialogues and coordination with the US.

Wang Yi said that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson of the US paid his first visit to China two days ago, during which the two sides reached clear-cut consensus on well developing China-US relations at a new starting point under the spirit of no conflict, no confrontation, mutual respect, and win-win cooperation. Rex Tillerson expressed that the US and China should face the future, jointly chart bilateral relations for the next 50 years and well plan for cooperation in all fields. The positive stand taken by the US is encouraging. China always takes a long-term approach when viewing China-US relations, and is willing to advance bilateral relations from a strategic height. As the biggest developing and developed countries, China and the US should take a historical and long-term perspective when steering and charting bilateral relations.
