Wang Yi Meets with Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se of ROK

On February 18, 2017 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se of the Republic of Korea (ROK) on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

Wang Yi expressed that this year marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the ROK. We should treasure the valuable outcomes achieved from China-ROK relations up to now and make efforts to eliminate existing disturbance, so as to ensure bilateral strategic cooperative partnership to develop in a healthy manner.

Wang Yi reiterated China's opposition to the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system in the ROK and stressed that the security of a country should not be achieved at the expense of others' security. China understands the ROK's need to safeguard its own security. Meanwhile, the ROK should respect China's legitimate stance.

Both sides also exchanged views on the situation of the Korean Peninsula. Wang Yi said that although the situation is getting increasingly complicated and severe at present, efforts to seek peace should not be abandoned. All related sides, while strictly carrying out the UN Security Council resolutions, should also actively explore breakthrough points for the resumption of negotiation, and end the negative cycle of the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue.
