Xi Jinping Holds Telephone Talks with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

On the evening of December 26, 2016, President Xi Jinping held telephone talks at request with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Xi Jinping spoke positively of Ban Ki-moon's positive efforts in promoting world peace, development and prosperity during his tenure as UN Secretary-General for 10 years, and his important contribution to deepening cooperation between China and the UN. Xi Jinping pointed out that currently all countries in the world are facing many new problems and new challenges, and it is necessary to enhance effective global governance and better give play to the UN's role. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has faithfully fulfilled the duties conferred by the UN Charter, led the UN Secretariat to actively carry out works, conducted consultations and cooperation with member states and achieved important outcomes including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change, yielding remarkable achievements.

Xi Jinping stressed that with joint efforts made by both sides, China-UN cooperation has reached a new level. China will continue to firmly support the UN cause and maintain close cooperation with newly-appointed UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, so as to push China-UN relations for continuous development.

Ban Ki-moon said that on the eve of leaving office, he deeply appreciates China's significant support to him while serving as UN Secretary-General. China has played an important leading role in advancing the UN Global Sustainable Development Goals, boosting South-South cooperation, helping developing countries and tackling climate change. It is believed that China will continue to maintain close cooperation with the next UN Secretary-General and support the cause of international peace and sustainable development as always.
