2016/12/24

On December 23, 2016, when attending the 2nd Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Siem Reap of Cambodia, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai of Thailand.

Wang Yi expressed that this year is a special year for Thailand. The Chinese side feels deep sorrow for the passing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, and wishes that the country will achieve greater development under the leadership by King Maha Vajiralongkorn. China and Thailand share family-like friendship. China will firmly stand together with Thailand, and help the country to live through this tough period, so as to jointly inherit and carry forward the traditional friendship between the two countries.

Wang Yi said that the two countries have maintained close high-level contact this year and bilateral relations have made new achievements. Having withstood numerous tests, China-ASEAN relations are becoming steadier. The Chinese side is grateful to Thailand for holding an objective and fair stance, and playing a positive and constructive role in safeguarding the overall situation of China-ASEAN cooperation. China is willing to work together with Thailand to continuously push China-ASEAN relations to a new level.

Don Pramudwinai expressed that Thailand thanks China for its sympathy to the passing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and appreciates China's long-term and friendly exchanges with the Thai royal family. Thailand and China always share mutual respect, take care of each other and attach importance to the core interests and major concerns of both sides. Bilateral relations are regarded as a model of relationship between neighbouring countries. Thailand firmly supports the "Belt and Road" initiative, and is willing to enhance the docking of development strategies with China and deepen practical cooperation between the two countries. Thailand is glad to see that the South China Sea situation is stabilizing under the joint efforts made by China and other related countries, hoping that all countries could carry out relevant cooperation centering on the South China Sea in the spirit of mutual benefit and win-win results in the next stage.

Wang Yi stated that the LMC was first initiated by Thailand. Although the startup time is not long, it has seen rapid development and remarkable achievements. China is ready to work together with Thailand to insist on the practicability and efficiency of the LMC, and maintain the positive momentum of daily progress and monthly results, so as to bring more tangible benefits to all sub-regional countries.

Don Pramudwinai noted that as the initiator, Thailand is deeply gratified to see the important progress the LMC has achieved so far. Thailand regards the LMC as a natural extension of China's "Belt and Road" initiative, and wishes to enhance the docking of strategies with the Chinese side and all nations in the sub-region through taking part in this cooperation, so as to jointly boost regional peace, stability, development and prosperity.
