Wang Yi Meets with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhon of Cambodia
2016/12/23

On December 22, 2016, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who was in Siem Reap of Cambodia for the second Foreign Ministers' Meeting of the Lancang-Mekong River Cooperation (LMC), met with Senior Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhon of Cambodia.

Wang Yi said that the LMC is a new type of cooperation mechanism that sub-regional countries established in a spontaneous and voluntary way, which complies with the epochal trend of accelerated regional integration and conforms to the common wish of regional countries to enhance mutually beneficial cooperation. Since the convening of the first LMC Leaders' Meeting this March, the implementation of outcomes has achieved rapid development. China is willing to make joint efforts with countries along the Mekong River including Cambodia to usher the LMC into a new stage of overall implementation through the second LMC Foreign Ministers' Meeting.

Prak Sokhon expressed that the LMC is the product of sub-regional countries' common vision, in which China plays a vital role. The LMC has obtained remarkable achievements since its initiation and the first batch of projects is undergoing smooth progress, which fully embodies the practicability and effectiveness of the LMC. The Cambodian side is ready to intensify cooperation with all countries to push the second LMC Foreign Ministers' Meeting for a success.

Wang Yi pointed out that this year, China-Cambodia relations have withstood the ever-changing international situation. As a Chinese saying goes, "the distant journey tests the strength of a horse, and genuine gold stands the test of fire." China cherishes the fact that both countries always support each other, administrate and uphold justice in maintaining regional stability. President Xi Jinping's state visit to Cambodia has carried forward China-Cambodia traditional friendship, enhanced bilateral strategic cooperation and planned a new blueprint for bilateral comprehensive cooperation. Appreciating Cambodia's active support to the "Belt and Road" initiative, the Chinese side hopes that both sides could speed up negotiations on the signing of cooperation guidelines and continue to facilitate the construction of key projects.

Prak Sokhon noted that Cambodia will always regard China as the most trustworthy friend. Grateful for China's strong support and selfless assistance to Cambodia's economic and social development for a long time, the Cambodian side stands ready to, together with China, well plan high-level exchanges in the next year, deepen cooperation in various fields and jointly elevate the strategic cooperative partnership to new highs. Cambodia treats the LMC as a natural extension of the "Belt and Road" initiative, and is willing to make use of the LMC platform to further reinforce strategic integration and cooperation within the "Belt and Road" framework with China.
