Xi Jinping Meets with Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger

On December 2, 2016, President Xi Jinping met at the Great Hall of the People with former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger of the US, who was in China to attend China-US relations conference.

Xi Jinping appreciated Henry Kissinger's positive contributions to the development of China-US relations for a long time, and pointed out that a sustained, healthy and stable development of China-US relations meets the fundamental interests of the two peoples as well as is conducive to peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large. The development history of China-US relations since the establishment of diplomatic relationship has proven that common interests far outweigh the differences between the two countries. At present, the US enters into a transition stage from an old administration to a new one. China is willing to make joint efforts with the US to ensure the smooth transition of China-US relations and continue to maintain the stable development of bilateral relations at the new starting point so as to write a new chapter.

Xi Jinping stressed that China and the US should have a correct understanding of each other's strategic intentions, abandon the zero-sum mentality and stick to non-confrontation, non-conflict, mutual respect and win-win cooperation in a bid to boost the construction of a new type of major- country relationship between China and the US. Both sides should maintain close exchanges at high levels and in various fields, safeguard sustained and stable development of bilateral mutually beneficial economic and trade relations, give full play to the inter-governmental and institutional dialogues and consultations, expand practical cooperation in all areas and step up communication and coordination in major international and regional affairs. The two countries should properly handle some different views and disputes between both countries in a constructive manner.

Henry Kissinger thanked President Xi Jinping for meeting him again, who is an old friend of China. He noted that he is honored to make contributions to the development of bilateral relations. US-China relationship is of great importance to the two countries and world at large. He believes that it is also the expectation of the new US government to facilitate sustained, stable and better development of US-China relations. He is willing to continue to play a positive role in enhancing mutual understanding, exchanges and cooperation between the US and China.

State Councilor Yang Jiechi and other people attended the meeting.
