On November 29, 2016, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), President and Chairman of Central Military Commission Xi Jinping visited Cuban Embassy in China to mourn the passing of Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro.

At around 11:30 a.m., Xi Jinping arrived at the mourning hall of Cuban Embassy in China. The portrait of Fidel Castro was hung in the hall. The wreaths sent by Xi Jinping, Premier Li Keqiang, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Zhang Dejiang, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Yu Zhengsheng, Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao were placed before the portrait.

Xi Jinping walked up to the portrait of Fidel Castro, observed a moment of silence and bowed to the portrait three times. Then he left notes and signed his name on the condolences book.

Xi Jinping pointed out during the mourning that Comrade Fidel Castro is the founder of the Communist Party of Cuba and Cuba’s socialist cause, and a great leader of the Cuban people. He is a great figure of our times, and his immortal historic contributions to the world's socialist development and support for the cause of justice for all countries will be forever remembered. Today, I visited the embassy to show that at this special moment, the CPC, the Chinese government and people stand together with the Communist Party of Cuba, the Cuban government and people. It is believed that under the strong leadership of President Raúl Castro, the Communist Party of Cuba, the Cuban government and people will carry forward the will of Comrade Fidel Castro, turn sorrow into strength and keep making new achievements in Cuba’s national construction and the development of socialism.

Xi Jinping stressed that dedicated his life to China-Cuba friendship, Comrade Fidel Castro is the founder and propeller of China-Cuba relations. His passing is a great loss to the Cuban and Latin American people, who have lost an excellent son, and the Chinese people have lost a close comrade and sincere friend. The Chinese people and I miss him deeply. Cuba is the first Latin American country to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China and there is special friendship between the two countries. China is willing to work more closely with the Cuban comrades to firmly uphold mutual trust, help each other and continuously push friendly relations between the two parties and countries for sustained and stable development in a bid to fulfill Comrade Fidel Castro's will.

Cuban Ambassador to China Miguel Angel Ramirez Ramos expressed sincere thanks to Xi Jinping’s condolences on behalf of the Communist Party of Cuba, the Cuban government and President Raul Castro, and noted that such gestures once again fully embody the friendly sentiments of the CPC, the Chinese government and people towards the Communist Party of Cuba, the Cuban government and people as well as show the high level of bilateral relations. Miguel Angel Ramirez Ramos said that Comrade Fidel Castro always attached great importance to Cuba-China relations and paid close attention to China’s achievements in socialist construction. The Communist Party of Cuba and the Cuban government will carry on Comrade Fidel Castro's will to constantly push forward the development of Cuba-China relations.
