Xi Jinping Sends Congratulatory Message to President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal over Antonio Guterres's Election as the Next UN Secretary-General

On October 13, 2016 local time, President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message to President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal over Antonio Guterres’s election as the next UN Secretary-General, who once served as Prime Minister of Portugal and UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

Xi Jinping pointed out in the message that as the most universal, representative and authoritative inter-governmental international organization, the UN plays an irreplaceable and important role in international affairs. I believe that Mr. Antonio Guterres will fulfill his commitment to the UN Charter and work with all parities to make contributions to coping with global challenges, safeguarding world peace, promoting common development and pushing forward global cooperation.

Xi Jinping stressed that China and Portugal share a traditional friendship with constantly enhancing political mutual trust and continuously strengthening practical cooperation in various areas. The Chinese side is willing to work with Portugal to continuously push forward bilateral friendly cooperative relations.
