Ministry of Foreign Affairs Holds Briefing for Chinese and Foreign Media on President Xi Jinping's State Visits to Cambodia and Bangladesh and His Attendance at the 8th BRICS Summit to Be Held in Goa of India

On October 10, 2016, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a briefing for Chinese and foreign media. Vice Foreign Minister Li Baodong and Assistant Foreign Minister Kong Xuanyou respectively introduced relevant information on President Xi Jinping's forthcoming state visits to Cambodia and Bangladesh as well as attendance at the 8th BRICS Summit to be held in Goa of India, and answered questions from the journalists.

I. On State Visits to Cambodia and Bangladesh

Kong Xuanyou expressed that President Xi Jinping will pay state visits to Cambodia and Bangladesh from October 13 to 15. China and Cambodia enjoy a long-standing friendship. Cambodia is a friendly neighbor and important cooperation partner of China. China is willing to closely cooperate with Cambodia, well implement the consensus reached by leaders of the two countries, and deepen practical cooperation in various fields, so as to continuously enrich the connotation of bilateral comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership. President Xi Jinping's visit this time is the first visit of a major Chinese leader to Cambodia after the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, which is of great significance to consolidating bilateral traditional friendship and further deepening the comprehensive strategic cooperation between the two sides. During the visit, President Xi Jinping will meet with King Norodom Sihamoni, visit Queen Mother Norodom Monineath, hold talks with Prime Minister Hun Sen and jointly attend the signing ceremony of bilateral cooperation documents with Prime Minister Hun Sen, so as to yield new results from docking development strategies of both countries and deepening practical cooperation in various fields.

Kong Xuanyou pointed out that China and Bangladesh are traditional friendly neighbor. Bilateral relationship has enjoyed healthy and stable development since the establishment of diplomatic relations 41 years ago. Both countries have maintained a sound momentum in high-level exchanges, continuously deepened practical cooperation in such areas as economy, trade and investment, and gradually expanded people-to-people and cultural exchanges. China is willing to work with Bangladesh to promote cooperation in the “Belt and Road” construction, so as to let bilateral relations better benefit the two peoples. President Xi Jinping's visit this time will exert milestone significance to China-Bangladesh relations. During the visit, President Xi Jinping will meet with Bangladeshi leaders including President Abdul Hamid and Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, hold talks with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and jointly attend the signing ceremony of bilateral cooperation documents with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Both sides will plan bilateral relations from a strategic height and establish the key direction of cooperation between the two sides in the future, so as to elevate China-Bangladesh relations to a new level.

II. On Attendance at the 8th BRICS Summit to be Held in Goa of India

Li Baodong said that President Xi Jinping will attend the 8th BRICS Summit to be held in Goa of India from October 15 to 16. The theme of the summit is "Building Responsive, Inclusive and Collective Solutions”. As the second meeting for leaders of BRICS countries since the BRICS Leaders' Informal Meeting in Hangzhou this September, the Goa Summit is of great significance. BRICS leaders will hold small group meetings, small group working luncheon and large group meetings to exchange in-depth views on BRICS cooperation and other international and regional issues of common concern. Relevant consensus will be embodied in the summit’s outcome document, the Goa Declaration. BRICS leaders will also hold a dialogue meeting with leaders of member countries of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation and hold talks with representatives of the BRICS Business Council. President Xi Jinping will also meet with leaders of relevant countries.

Li Baodong pointed out that this year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the BRICS cooperation mechanism. After 10 years of rapid development, BRICS countries are continuing to expand cooperation areas and improving the cooperation mechanism. China is a staunch supporter and active participant of the BRICS cooperation. The Goa Summit is expected to obtain positive results in the following aspects: first, send out the positive signal of confidence, unity and cooperation; second, deepen practical cooperation and elevate the cooperation level; third, strengthen communication and coordination in major international issues and safeguard common interests; and fourth, enhance dialogues and cooperation with regional countries. The Chinese side believes that under the joint efforts of all parties, the Goa Summit will be a complete success. A BRICS cooperation mechanism with continuously improving cooperation framework and more fruitful cooperation outcomes will make greater contributions to world peace, stability, development and prosperity.
