Xi Jinping Meets with Prime Minister António Costa of Portugal

On October 8, 2016, President Xi Jinping met at the Great Hall of the People with Prime Minister António Costa of Portugal.

Xi Jinping welcomed António Costa to visit China and attend the fifth Ministerial Conference of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries. Xi Jinping pointed out that the Chinese and Portuguese people enjoy long-lasting friendly exchanges. Since the establishment of diplomatic relationship 37 years ago, mutual understanding, mutual respect, mutual trust and mutual support are the theme of the development of bilateral relations. In recent years, China and Portugal have witnessed frequent high-level exchanges, fruitful outcomes from practical cooperation, diversified people-to-people and cultural exchanges and close coordination in major international and regional affairs, constantly enriching the connotation of bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership.

Xi Jinping stressed that China and Portugal should maintain the momentum of exchanges at high-level and in various fields to consolidate strategic mutual trust. Both countries should continue to understand each other, support each other's core interests and major concerns, deepen cooperation in investment and explore broader market. The Chinese side is willing to encourage more enterprises to invest and establish business in Portugal and expand its investment areas from energy to finance, insurance, health care, infrastructure construction and others. The two countries should look into the future and boost cooperation in sea and other fields. China supports Portugal's active participation in the "Belt and Road" initiative and encourages both countries to enhance cooperation in maritime research, port logistics and other "Blue Economy" areas. We should intensify civilization dialogues, push forward exchanges and cooperation in areas including people-to-people and cultural engagement and education and pass on the spirit of friendship. China is willing to, together with all countries including Portugal, promote exchanges and learning among different civilizations, so as to build a more colorful world.

Xi Jinping noted that China-EU relations boast sound development in general. China and the EU share wide cooperation space in global economic governance. China firmly supports the European integration process. It is hoped that the Portuguese side could play a greater role and push for smooth and healthy development of China-EU relations in economy, trade and other various sectors.

António Costa expressed that Portugal has a long history of exchanges with China. The country admires China's achievements in reform and development. In recent years, Portugal-China relations have gone through in-depth development. Both sides have maintained close high-level exchanges, constantly strengthened economic and trade cooperation and people-to-people and cultural exchanges as well as kept sound communication and cooperation in multilateral areas. He is willing to, through the visit this time, deepen Portugal-China all-round cooperation and push forward cooperation under the "Belt and Road" framework, especially in areas of energy, finance, electricity, infrastructure, agriculture, manufacturing, culture, tourism and others. The Portuguese side stands ready to actively play a constructive role in advancing the development of EU-China relations.
