2016/10/08

On October 7, 2016 local time, President Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia met in Bogota with visiting Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Juan Manuel Santos expressed that Colombia attaches great importance to its relations with China, which are of great strategic significance. Colombia is grateful for the strong support and assistance offered by China over the years to its peace process. The process has encountered certain setbacks recently, but as a Chinese proverb goes, "crisis contains opportunities", the Colombian government will persist in its efforts, solicit opinions from all sides in a wider range and pool public opinions to make the next-stage development of the peace process stronger and more stable. The Colombian side expects China to continue to support the peace process. Progress of the peace process will open up new opportunities and broader space for Colombia-China economic and trade cooperation. Colombia is willing to strengthen pragmatic cooperation with China.

Wang Yi conveyed warm greetings from President Xi Jinping to Juan Manuel Santos. Wang Yi said that China has always firmly supported the peace process of Colombia. Peace is the aspiration of the Colombian people and an irreversible trend of the national development of Colombia. Led by President Juan Manuel Santos, the peace process of Colombia has achieved great progress. Despite recent twists and turns, the Colombian government continues to push forward the peace process, and all parties in Colombia have agreed to find a final solution through peaceful consultations. As the Chinese people believe, "the road to happiness is strewn with setbacks", but "where there is a will there is a way." As long as Colombia sticks to the general direction of peace, the day of realizing peace will eventually come. China and the international community will continue to firmly support the peace process of Colombia.

Wang Yi noted that China always views China-Colombia relations from a strategic height, and is willing to work with Colombia to strengthen strategic communication, enhance mutual trust, deepen pragmatic cooperation, explore bilateral free trade arrangements, strengthen cooperation in international affairs, jointly safeguard the interests of developing countries, maintain the international free trade system and push for continuous and in-depth development of China-Colombia relations.
