Xi Jinping Meets with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada

On August 31, 2016, President Xi Jinping met with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada at Diaoyutai State Guesthouse.

Xi Jinping welcomed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to pay an official visit to China and attend the G20 Hangzhou Summit. Xi Jinping pointed out that China and Canada share a profound traditional friendship and bilateral relations in general have constantly been moving forward since the establishment of diplomatic relationship. Under the new circumstances, both sides share more common interests and cooperation space. China is willing to, together with Canada, adhere to the principal of mutual respect and win-win cooperation to strive for new pages in the development of bilateral relations as well as better benefit the two peoples.

Xi Jinping stressed that China and Canada should reinforce high-level exchanges. Leaders of the two countries should maintain communication and coordination on topics of common interests through various ways and strengthen dialogues and cooperation in all areas through existing bilateral mechanisms. Both sides should integrate development strategies, expand practical cooperation and join efforts to enhance cooperation in such fields as energy resources, financial service, scientific and technological innovation, modern agriculture, equipment manufacturing, environmental protection and energy conservation in an attempt to facilitate a batch of landmark projects. We should also continue to strengthen cooperation in judiciary and law enforcement as well as mechanism construction, deepen people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and expand exchanges and cooperation in areas including culture, education, women, youth, sports and local affairs in order to boost mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples. The two countries should respect each other's choice of development path and respective core interests and major concerns, and properly deal with differences in a constructive manner. Both sides should also step up multilateral cooperation. The Chinese side welcomes Canada's announcement to apply for the membership of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), and is ready to work with Canada to strengthen communication and coordination, safeguard the multilateral trade system featuring openness and inclusiveness and deepen cooperation in coping with climate change, peacekeeping, marine protection and other aspects.

Xi Jinping noted that it goes with the international community's common expectation to well host the G20 Hangzhou Summit. Centering on the theme and key agenda items of the summit, China has made joint efforts with all sides including the Canadian side over the past year in forging outcome highlights and promoting the construction of an innovative, invigorated, interconnected and inclusive world economy. China stands ready to maintain close cooperation with all sides, so as to ensure the summit a complete success.

Justin Trudeau expressed that the visit this time has reminded him of his father's visit to China back in the day and the history of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relationship facilitated by his father. Speaking highly of the significant achievements China has made for the past decades, the Canadian side is glad to see the rapid development of its relations with China in various areas including economy, trade, people-to-people and cultural exchanges. Under the current situation, bilateral relations have returned to a robust and prudent development path, which not only brings benefit to the two peoples, but also is conductive to world peace and development. Dedicated to deepening cooperation with China in economy, trade, investment, law enforcement and other areas, Canada decides to apply for the membership of the AIIB and will intensify Canada-China coordination and cooperation in multilateral affairs. The Canadian side backs the G20 Hangzhou Summit to focus on innovative and inclusive growth as well as other topics and strengthen international cooperation to cope with global challenges, and Canada will support China to successfully host the Hangzhou Summit.
