Wang Yi: China is Devoted to Promoting Global Green, Low-Carbon and Sustainable Development
2016/08/26

On August 26, 2016, when holding talks with President of the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Peter Thomson, Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed that China supports the UNGA to play a positive role in tackling climate change so as to promote global green, low-carbon and sustainable development. In the next stage, the international community can focus on the following three aspects. First, promote the Paris Agreement on Climate Change to come into force at an early date. China will set an example by completing its domestic legal procedures for the ratification of the Paris Agreement before the G20 Hangzhou Summit. Second, abide by the principles of equity, common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities to actively accelerate the follow-up negotiations of the Paris Agreement and prepare for its implementation. Third, launch South-South cooperation on climate change and help developing countries with their capacity building.

Wang Yi noted that as a major developing country, it is not only an international responsibility of China to actively cope with climate change, but also its internal demand for sustainable development. China will adhere to the concepts of innovative, coordinated, green, open and shared development, and vigorously push forward green development, so as to make new contributions to global ecological security.
