2016/08/24

On August 24, 2016 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister Yun Byung-Se of the Republic of Korea (ROK), who was attending the 8th Trilateral Foreign Ministers' Meeting among China, Japan and the ROK in Tokyo, Japan.

Wang Yi said that today coincides with the 24th anniversary of the establishment of China-ROK diplomatic relationship. Over the past 24 years, bilateral relations have achieved comprehensive and leapfrog development and the enormous cooperation potential has been given full play, which brings significant benefits to the two countries and their peoples as well as plays an important role in safeguarding regional stability. These outcomes do not come easily, and both sides should cherish them with great care and not allow any interference and distraction to tamper these outcomes since they synergize the efforts of the two governments and all circles of the two countries. The Chinese side firmly opposes the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense missile defense system in the ROK by the US, and will not accept any acts that could hurt China's strategic and security interests. It is hoped that the ROK can calmly weigh the pros and cons as well as gains and losses, meet China halfway instead of taking parted ways, and jointly find a proper solution that both sides can accept with China. Wang Yi noted that the ROK is an important member of the G20. The Chinese side welcomes President Park Geun-hye to attend the G20 Summit in China, and is willing to maintain communication with the ROK in this regard.

Yun Byung-Se expressed that the ROK-China-Japan Trilateral Foreign Ministers' Meeting, which came right before the G20 Hangzhou Summit, is of great significance. The ROK side will fully support China to well host the Hangzhou Summit, and work with China to jointly promote the summit to make due contributions to world economic growth. Since the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relationship, especially in recent three years, bilateral cooperation in various fields has scored great progress. Next year marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations. The ROK hopes to take it as an opportunity to enhance mutual trust and elevate bilateral relations to another new level. The ROK side congratulates on the outstanding achievements that Chinese athletes have won in Rio Olympic Games, and is willing to strengthen cooperation and boost the two peoples' friendship by focusing on the Winter Olympic Games that will be held in the two countries successively. The country also stands ready to intensify communication and cooperation with China on multilateral occasions.

The two sides also exchanged in-depth views on the Korean Peninsula situation and other issues.
