Li Keqiang Holds Talks with State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar

On the afternoon of August 18, 2016, Premier Li Keqiang met at the Great Hall of the People with State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar, who was paying an official visit to China.

Li Keqiang expressed that connected by rivers and mountains, China and Myanmar enjoy profound Paukphaw friendship. China appreciates the fact that you have chosen China as the first country to visit outside the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) after taking office as the State Counsellor, which shows the high importance you yourself and the Myanmar government have attached to bilateral relations.

Li Keqiang pointed out that no matter how the international situation changes, China and Myanmar always support each other and treat each other as equals. The Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence jointly initiated by China, Myanmar and India have become the fundamental principle of international relations. China supports Myanmar in choosing a development path suitable to its national conditions and backs its efforts to advance national reconciliation, develop economy and improve people's livelihood. We are willing to work with Myanmar to consolidate political mutual trust and strengthen communication and cooperation between governments, parliaments, political parties, armies, regions, social organizations and others so as to promote greater development of bilateral relations in the new era and jointly boost regional peace, stability and prosperity.

Li Keqiang stressed that China and Myanmar enjoy strong complementarity in launching practical cooperation. Such cooperation aims to enhance the well-being of the two peoples and realize mutual benefit and win-win results. China is ready to reinforce the docking of development strategies and better plan cooperation in key areas with Myanmar. The two sides should properly advance cooperation in major projects including the China-Myanmar oil and gas pipeline project and the Myitsone Dam, elevate the level of infrastructure construction and connectivity, boost cooperation in such areas as economy, trade, agriculture and forestry, and expand exchanges in culture, education and health in order to consolidate the connection between the two peoples' hearts.

Li Keqiang expressed that this year coincides with the 25th anniversary of the establishment of China-ASEAN dialogue relations. China attaches importance to developing relations with the ASEAN, supports the building of the ASEAN community and treasures Myanmar's role as an important member of the ASEAN. China is willing to seize the opportunity with all ASEAN countries including Myanmar to comprehensively upgrade cooperation level and build a closer China-ASEAN community of common destiny.

Aung San Suu Kyi noted that Myanmar-China friendly exchanges enjoy a long history, and the Paukphaw friendship has a profound foundation among the public. The new Myanmar government pays high attention to developing relations with China, and is grateful to China for its assistance in the economic and social development of Myanmar. Although the international situation has changed, Myanmar will continuously devote itself to further consolidating and developing bilateral relations. Myanmar is willing to, together with China, maintain the momentum of high-level exchanges, enhance political mutual trust, promote practical cooperation in energy and other fields through strengthening communication, expand exchanges and cooperation in border trade, agriculture, health, education and other areas, jointly maintain stability in border regions and boost the friendship between the two peoples, so as to realize common development. Myanmar stands ready to take the 25th anniversary of the establishment of ASEAN-China dialogue relations as an opportunity to push for constant progress of ASEAN-China relations.

Both sides also exchanged views on the northern Myanmar issue. Li Keqiang expressed that China respects Myanmar's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and will continue to play a constructive role in promoting peace talks during Myanmar's peace process. He wished the 21st Century Panglong Conference a success. Aung San Suu Kyi spoke positively of the sound communication and coordination between the two countries in Myanmar's peace process, and expressed her willingness to continuously enhance coordination and cooperation on the issue.

Prior to the talks, Li Keqiang held a welcoming ceremony for Aung San Suu Kyi in the North Hall of the Great Hall of the People. Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Liu Xiaofeng and others attended the talks.

After the talks, Li Keqiang and Aung San Suu Kyi jointly witnessed the signing of related bilateral cooperation documents.
