Wang Yi: Explore the Mode of Preventive Diplomacy Compatible with Regional Situation Step by Step
2016/07/27

On July 26, 2016 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the 23rd ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Vientiane, Laos.

Wang Yi expressed that as an important maintainer and contributor of regional security cooperation, China always pays high attention to the role of the ARF and actively participates in the dialogue and cooperation under the ARF framework. China has held more than 40 cooperation projects since the forum was founded and cooperation projects held by China account for one third of the total ARF projects each year, ranking the first among ARF members. It fully shows that China supports the development of the ARF with practical actions.

China believes that the forum should center around confidence-building measures throughout the whole process, and explore a preventive diplomacy mode compatible with regional situation step by step on the basis of consensus. All sides should further strengthen dialogue and cooperation and enhance understanding and mutual trust among regional countries.

Wang Yi said that situation of the Asia-Pacific region is generally stable with its constantly rising status and influence in the global landscape. Meanwhile, the region is facing non-traditional security challenges such as terrorism, natural disasters and transnational crime. All countries should concentrate and deal with the challenges through cooperation. China actively advocates the Asian security concept featuring common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security and the new type of international relations with win-win cooperation at its heart. Guided by these new security concepts, China is willing to strengthen security dialogue and cooperation under the ARF framework and jointly push forward the forum to make greater contribution to regional peace and security with all sides.
