Wang Yi Meets with Foreign Minister Stéphane Dion of Canada

On July 25, 2016 local time, when attending a series of Foreign Ministers' meetings on East Asian cooperation in Vientiane of Laos, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister Stéphane Dion of Canada.

Wang Yi said that we successfully held the 1st annual meeting between Chinese and Canadian Foreign Ministers in Ottawa not long ago, reaching plenty of consensus on enhancing China-Canada strategic cooperation. As each other's strategic partner, China and Canada share extensive common interests. At present, China-Canada relations are faced with new development opportunities. It is hoped that both sides can make joint efforts, enhance mutual trust, expand cooperation, and ensure the smooth and successful important exchanges in the next stage between the two countries, so as to open up a new golden era of bilateral relations.

Wang Yi introduced China's principles and stance on the South China Sea issue, and pointed out that China and ASEAN countries are committed to resolving relevant disputes through the dual-track approach. The joint statement on the full and effective implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea issued by Foreign Ministers of China and ASEAN countries conforms to the spirit of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and is conducive to maintaining regional peace and stability.

Stéphane Dion said that Canadian leaders attach high importance to Canada-China relations, and hope to make joint efforts with China to deepen practical cooperation in various fields, promote bilateral relations to move forward along the correct track through important bilateral exchanges, and initiate a new era.

Stéphane Dion said that Canada takes no position on disputes related to the South China Sea issue, and believes that relevant joint statement issued by ASEAN countries and China this time has received positive response. It is hoped that the statement will play a constructive role in easing regional situation.
