Wang Yi Meets with Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith of Laos
2016/07/25

On the evening of July 24, 2016 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Vientiane of Laos with Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith of Laos.

Wang Yi expressed that Laos is a close neighbor and strategic partner of China. Since Laos assumed the rotating presidency of the ASEAN, China-ASEAN relations have once again achieved new progress. China appreciates Laos' adherence to an objective and fair stance on the South China Sea issue. After the temporary arbitral tribunal announced its verdict, more and more countries in the world understand and support China's just proposition. There are more voices challenging the validity of the verdict as well. Many ASEAN members also believe that the South China Sea arbitration case is not an issue between China and the ASEAN, which should not affect the development of China-ASEAN relations. China is willing to support Laos, as the host of the series of Foreign Ministers' meetings this time, to coordinate all sides, focus on cooperation, and commit to development, so as to ensure the success of the meetings.

Saleumxay Kommasith noted that Laos and China are comprehensive strategic partners of cooperation, and Laos is willing to actively and continuously push forward Laos-China cooperation and ASEAN-China relations. The South China Sea arbitration case has caused damage to the ASEAN and regional stability, and most of the ASEAN members do not hope to add fuel to the flames. As the rotating presidency of the ASEAN, Laos will coordinate with all sides to safeguard the unity of the ASEAN and the overall situation of ASEAN-China relations.
