Yang Jiechi Meets with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon of UN

On July 8, 2016, State Councilor Yang Jiechi met at Zhongnanhai with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon of the United Nations (UN).

Yang Jiechi spoke highly of the UN's important role in promoting world peace and development, and appreciated Ban Ki-moon's contribution to this end. Yang Jiechi expressed that China always adheres to the path of multilateralism, safeguards current international order with the UN at the core and the UN Charter as the foundation, and actively promotes political settlement of global hotspot issues. China strongly supports the UN's work in various fields such as society, development and arms control, and has made positive efforts in safeguarding world peace, promoting common development and advancing international cooperation. In light of new changes in the international situation, President Xi Jinping proposed to build a new type of international relations taking win-win cooperation as the core and forge a community of common destiny for mankind. Under the guidance of this important diplomatic concept, we will more actively participate in the UN's work in all areas and work with the international community to better safeguard and promote human well-being. China is willing to cooperate with the UN to actively boost the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Paris Agreement on climate changes. The UN is an important international organization participating in the G20 mechanism. China will make joint efforts with all relevant parties, including the UN, to ensure important and positive results from the G20 Hangzhou Summit.

Ban Ki-moon expressed that China has made significant contributions to UN causes, and he appreciated President Xi Jinping's commitments made during the series of summits marking the 70th anniversary of the founding of the UN and China's specific implementation measures. China has played a leading role in UN peacekeeping missions, sustainable development, dealing with climate change, combating epidemic diseases and other areas. The UN is willing to further enhance cooperation with China to jointly deal with all kinds of challenges and will support China to host a successful G20 Hangzhou Summit.

Both sides also exchanged views on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue and other issues. Yang Jiechi expounded China's relevant principles and stance.
