Wang Yi: Strive to Build a Stronger and More Efficient UN
2016/07/07

On July 7, 2016, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon jointly met the press at Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing.

Wang Yi expressed that this year, Mr. Ban Ki-moon's tenure as the UN Secretary-General will come to a successful end. Over the past 10 years, Mr. Secretary-General has led the UN to cope with complex and complicated situation changes, tackled all kinds of threats and challenges and elevated UN causes to a new height. The Paris Agreement on climate change was reached and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted. All these are latest outcomes of the UN, which also embody the hard work of Secretary-General himself. Mr. Ban Ki-moon is a qualified and excellent Secretary-General.

Wang Yi noted that at the end of this year, the UN will have a new leader. I have hosted 7 candidates who have submitted their nomination for the Secretary-General in Beijing. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China fully realizes its important responsibility and will help to elect the best candidate who firmly observes the UN Charter, holds a fair and balanced position, has exceptional abilities and forges ahead with determination in a just and responsible attitude. I believe this is also the common expectation of the international community and Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Wang Yi said that our "global village" is getting smaller and global challenges are becoming more prominent. To well manage the "global village" requires joint efforts of all countries and coordination of the UN. All sides are holding increasing expectation towards the UN and its status is constantly rising as well. All countries should make joint efforts to build a stronger and more efficient UN.
