Xi Jinping Meets with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras of Greece

On July 5, 2016, President Xi Jinping met at the Great Hall of the People with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras of Greece.

Xi Jinping welcomed Alexis Tsipras's successful visit to China on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the establishment of China-Greece comprehensive strategic partnership, which has yielded important results. Xi Jinping pointed out that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Greece 44 years ago, both countries have upheld the principle of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit when developing bilateral relations, forming a long-lasting and ever fresh traditional friendship. China regards Greece as a strategic partner in the European Union (EU). Under current international situation, both ancient civilizations should join hands to consolidate political mutual trust and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, so as to promote China-Greece as well as China-EU comprehensive strategic partnerships to another new level.

Xi Jinping stressed that China and Greece should intensify high-level exchanges, and continuously understand and support each other in issues concerning respective core interest and major concerns. Both sides should boost practical cooperation. China is willing to continuously work with Greece to build the Piraeus port into the biggest transshipment port of containers in the Mediterranean Sea, the bridgehead of land-ocean transportation, and a major pivot for the "Belt and Road" initiative cooperation to mobilize practical cooperation in broad areas between the two countries. The two sides should enhance mutual learning in civilization and make people-to-people and cultural exchanges a bridge and link of hearts of the two peoples. Both countries should maintain close coordination and cooperation in major international and regional issues. China would like to see Europe play an active role in international affairs, and also hopes to see a prosperous and stable EU as well as the UK.

Alexis Tsipras congratulated on the 95th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, and expressed that he is very pleased to visit China on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership. The two peoples enjoy glorious culture and similar historical experience. Today, Greece is ready to align its development strategy with China's "Belt and Road" initiative during the process of stabilizing and revitalizing national economy, and play its role as a hub between the west and the east in areas such as energy and transportation. Greece is willing to make joint efforts with China to cement mutually beneficial cooperation on the basis of the Piraeus port project, which is conducive to the two peoples and will produce positive regional influence.
