Yang Jiechi Meets with Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier of Germany

On June 13, 2016, State Councilor Yang Jiechi met in Beijing with Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier of Germany.

Yang Jiechi expressed that close high-level exchanges between China and Germany reflect the development level of bilateral relations. As a successful innovation of bilateral cooperation mechanism, China-Germany inter-governmental consultation has played a central role of coordination and promotion in facilitating bilateral cooperation. Both China and Germany are influential countries in the world and in respective regions. Deepening all-round strategic partnership between both countries conforms to the fundamental interests of China and Germany. It will push forward China-EU relations and promote world peace, stability and development as well. Both sides should make joint efforts to implement the consensus reached by both leaders, and strengthen cooperation in various fields, so as to constantly elevate China-Germany relations to new levels. China stands ready to enhance coordination and cooperation with Germany and jointly push for fruitful results at the G20 Hangzhou Summit.

Yang Jiechi pointed out that as a comprehensive strategic partner of the EU, China always attaches high importance to developing relations with the EU as well as its member states and devotes itself to deepening China-EU cooperation. Both sides should continuously advance the construction of five major platforms for cooperation, namely joint investment fund, connectivity platform, legal affairs dialogue, digitalization and facilitation of personnel exchanges, so as to ensure fruitful results from the forthcoming 18th China-EU Leaders' Meeting. It is hoped that the EU can fulfill its obligation as stipulated in Section 15 of the Protocol on the Accession of China to the World Trade Organization in due course, so as to ensure the healthy development of China-EU economic and trade relationship.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed that it is highly necessary for Germany and China to maintain close high-level exchanges and close communication and coordination on major international issues under current complex and changeable international situation. Germany is willing to take this round of inter-governmental consultation as an opportunity to further deepen cooperation in various fields with China.

Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.
