Yang Jiechi Holds Telephone Talks with High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini

On May 25, 2016, State Councilor Yang Jiechi held telephone talks with High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.

Yang Jiechi expressed that this year is a key year for China and the EU to implement the docking of development strategies. It is hoped that both sides can make full use of the leaders' annual meeting mechanism and other mechanisms, map out major areas and direction of China-EU cooperation in the next stage, conduct in-depth dialogue and coordination in major international and regional hotspot issues, and push forward the construction of China-EU four major partnerships featuring peace, growth, reform and civilization.

Yang Jiechi expressed that as a main forum for international economic cooperation, the G20 plays an irreplaceable role in global economic governance. Under current complex world economic situation, all parties are looking forward to holding a successful and fruitful G20 Hangzhou Summit, which also conforms to the common interests of all sides including the EU. As important members of the G20, China and the EU have maintained favorable and effective communication and cooperation within the G20 framework. At present, preparation work of the Hangzhou Summit has yielded important progress. The Chinese side appreciates the EU leaders for supporting China to successfully host the Hangzhou Summit on many occasions, and stands ready to strengthen communication and coordination with the EU, and ensure the Hangzhou Summit to achieve positive results in promoting the G20 to formulate blueprints for innovation, growth as well as other aspects, so as to chart the course for and inject new and important vitality into world economic development.

Federica Mogherini expressed that the EU pays attention to developing relations with China, hoping both sides to continuously deepen cooperation in various fields, and maintain in-depth and constructive dialogue and cooperation in major global issues. The EU hopes to make joint efforts with China to promote this year's EU-China leaders' meeting to achieve important and positive results. The EU stands ready to conduct close communication and cooperation with China, and ensure the G20 Hangzhou Summit a success, so as to make prominent contributions to enhancing global economic governance and accelerating global economic growth.

The two sides agreed to hold the 6th round of China-EU High-level Strategic Dialogue in the near future.

Both sides also exchanged views on the Iranian nuclear issue, the Afghan issue as well as other issues.
