Wang Yi Meets with Executive Secretary of the UN ESCAP Shamshad Akhtar

On April 11, 2016, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing with Executive Secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Shamshad Akhtar.

Wang Yi stated that the UN ESCAP is the most important comprehensive organization for economic and social development in the Asia-Pacific region, and it undertakes the mission of promoting economic development and improving people's livelihood across the region. As the most important public goods provided by China to the Asia-Pacific region and the Eurasian continent, the Belt and Road initiative is highly consistent with the ESCAP's cooperative objectives and orientations. The development of bilateral cooperation enjoys a solid foundation and great potential. China is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with the ESCAP to improve the level of cooperation, and promote cooperation in such key areas as connectivity and sustainable development, so as to score practical fruits.

Shamshad Akhtar said that the UN ESCAP values China's achievements and experience on development, and is willing to deepen cooperation with China to jointly promote the connectivity and the Belt and Road initiative, and guide the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
