Wang Yi: Working Together to Open up a New Future for China-Myanmar Relations
2016/04/06

On April 5, 2016 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar jointly met the press after holding talks in Naypyidaw.

Wang Yi expressed that my visit to Myanmar upon invitation after the Myanmar new government took office and on the eve of Myanmar’s New Year is a full demonstration of the “paukphaw” friendship between the Chinese and Myanmar people and the great importance placed by both sides to China-Myanmar relations. My visit to Myanmar this time aims at sending a clear message to Myanmar and the international community that when Myanmar is turning to a new page of history, the Chinese people are willing to stand together with Myanmar people and China will continue to be a good neighbor, good friend and good partner of the Myanmar people.

Wang Yi expressed that during the talks, I briefly introduced China’s Myanmar policy to Foreign Minister Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi. China cherishes the “paukphaw” friendship between both peoples. This traditional friendship is based on the close contacts of the two countries linked by mountains and rivers and rooted at the heart of both peoples. It goes beyond differences in social systems. I believe that this friendship will be further carried forward in the new era.

China unswervingly pursues a friendly policy toward Myanmar. Directed at the entire country and nation, the policy will not be affected by changes of domestic situations or government. It is stable, long-term and sustainable.

China does not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries. We respect the political choice made by the Myanmar people, support the process of peaceful reconciliation in Myanmar and hope that under the leadership of the new government, Myanmar could embark on a development path in line with its national conditions and with public support.

The Chinese and Myanmar economies are highly complementary and enjoy great potential. China could become the most ideal, reliable and long-lasting partner of Myanmar to revitalize its economy and improve its people’s livelihood in the future. We are willing to work together with Myanmar to realize common development and prosperity.

China appreciates that the new Myanmar government pursues a friendly policy toward China and that the National League for Democracy (NLD) is willing to continue to play an active role in China-Myanmar friendship. I had in-depth exchange of views with Foreign Minister Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi on enhancing cooperation in the next stage and reached broad consensus. We agreed to strengthen high-level exchanges, consolidate political mutual trust and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation. China stands ready to jointly work with the new government of Myanmar to open up a new future for China-Myanmar relations.

Aung San Suu Kyi expressed that just one week after the installation of the new Myanmar government, Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited Myanmar at invitation. .Both sides held friendly talks on strengthening bilateral cooperation and friendship between the two peoples. Myanmar pursues friendly policies toward all countries around the world. The new government of Myanmar is willing to strengthen friendly cooperation with China, which is believed to be conducive to the national development of Myanmar.
