Wang Yi: China-Myanmar Mutually Beneficial Cooperation Is Expected to Achieve Greater Development in New Era

On April 5, 2016 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi briefed on China’s attitude towards China-Myanmar cooperation in major projects at inquiry when jointly meeting journalists in Naypyidaw with Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar.

Wang Yi expressed that at present China is Myanmar’s largest trading partner, with bilateral trade volume accounting for 40 percent of Myanmar’s total foreign trade volume. China is also the largest investor in Myanmar, with Chinese investment accounting for about 50 percent of Myanmar’s total foreign investment. This is a major trend which precisely suggests that the two economies are highly complementary and that China-Myanmar mutually beneficial cooperation has huge space and great potential. Of course, there will inevitably appear some problems in the process of cooperation. Foreign Minister Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi and I have reached consensus that all problems can be solved properly through friendly consultations.

Wang Yi expressed that the expectation of the Myanmar people towards their new government is to develop economy and improve livelihood. As Myanmar’s neighbor and comprehensive strategic partner of cooperation, China stands ready to increase investment in Myanmar, help it build necessary infrastructure and assist the country to speed up the industrialization process and improve self-development capacity through bilateral cooperation in production capacity. China is willing to offer help within available resources to Myanmar to improve livelihood, including development of agriculture, water conservancy and other aspects. We will also instruct Chinese enterprises in Myanmar to abide by local laws and regulations, respect local customs, lay emphasis on ecological and environmental protection, undertake causes of public welfare and livelihood and fulfill corporate social responsibilities. It is believed that China-Myanmar mutually beneficial cooperation will achieve greater development in the new era, bringing more benefits to the two peoples, especially the Myanmar people.
