2016/03/28

On March 27, 2016 local time, Vice Premier Liu Yandong met in Cairo with Prime Minister Sherif Ismail of Egypt.

Liu Yandong said that Egypt was the first Arab and African country that established diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China. Since the establishment of the diplomatic relations 60 years ago, the bilateral relations have always maintained sound and steady development, serving as a model for China-Arab relations, China-Africa relations and South-South cooperation. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi's visit to China in December 2014 and President Xi Jinping's successful visit to Egypt at the beginning of this year have added new impetus to the development of bilateral relations. At present, China-Egypt relations are at a crucial stage of building on the past progress and forging ahead into the future. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi had a meeting with me this morning, and he made many good proposals and suggestions for the future cooperation. China is willing to make joint efforts with Egypt to earnestly implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, maintain the momentum of high-level mutual visits, strengthen the alignment of development strategies, steadily push forward major projects of infrastructure construction and production capacity cooperation under the framework of jointly building the "Belt and Road" initiative, and actively carry out exchanges and cooperation in education, science and technology, culture, public health, cultural heritage protection and others, so as to continuously push the bilateral cooperation for new achievements.

Sherif Ismail noted that Egypt is satisfied with the current development of Egypt-China relations, and hopes that the bilateral relations will become better and better, with wider areas of cooperation and more fruitful achievements. During current visit paid by Vice Premier Liu Yandong, the two sides have reached important consensus and signed a number of agreements on strengthening exchanges and cooperation in fields such as education, science and technology and culture, which is essential to Egypt's future development. Egypt attaches great importance to the friendship and cooperation with China, and is willing to make joint efforts with China to well implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state and actively plan and comprehensively promote exchanges and cooperation in various fields.

After the meeting, Liu Yandong and Sherif Ismail witnessed together the signing of agreements on matters including the joint funding plan for bilateral cooperation in higher education and science and technology, and inaugurated the "China-Egypt National Joint Laboratory on Renewable Energy".
