2016/03/23

On the evening of March 22, 2016, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai of Thailand in Sanya, Hainan. Both sides spoke positively of the current development of the China-Thailand relations and exchanged views mainly on the successful launch of the first Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Leaders' Meeting.

Wang Yi said that the LMC has achieved rapid and tremendous progress since its launch, which fully demonstrates that the cooperation mechanism is in line with the development demands of the six countries and has a broad prospect. China highly appreciates the contributions that Thailand has made as the original initiator and co-chairman of the LMC.

Wang Yi emphasized that the LMC, a new sub-regional cooperation, is about to commence its first leaders' meeting tomorrow. China is willing to work together with Thailand and other countries along the Mekong River to promote the meeting a complete success so as to turn the LMC mechanism into an example of the South-South cooperation in the new era, a platform where upstream and downstream countries strengthen solidarity and cooperation as well as a model that neighboring countries support each other.

Don Pramudwinai expressed gratitude to China for its great and active efforts to launch the LMC. He stressed that the LMC plays an important and leading role in the region's development. China's recent emergency water supplements to the downstream area of the Lancang-Mekong River fully demonstrates its sincerity to neighboring countries and is a good prelude of the LMC. Thailand is willing to make joint efforts with China and other parties to make the first Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Leaders' Meeting a success.
