Wang Yi Holds Talks with Foreign Minister Neneh MacDouall-Gaye of Gambia

On March 17, 2016, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks in Beijing with visiting Foreign Minister Neneh MacDouall-Gaye of Gambia.

Wang Yi expressed that as China and Gambia resume diplomatic relations today, the two countries usher in a historic moment when a new leaf in bilateral relations is turned over from now on.

Wang Yi stated that Chinese people have always harbored friendly feelings towards Gambian people. It may be said that the official resumption of ambassadorial-level diplomatic relations between China and Gambia today comes at a ripe moment with due conditions, which reflects the common aspiration of the two peoples and accords with the fundamental interests of the two countries and their peoples.

Want Yi pointed out that the one-China principle is the political premise and basis of China's establishment and development of diplomatic relations with any other country. China is willing to consolidate this basis with Gambia to maintain the healthy and stable development of the bilateral relations. We believe that the Gambian government will stick to the one-China principle and support China's great cause of peaceful reunification.

Wang Yi stressed that China will adhere to President Xi Jinping's idea of sincerity, real results, affinity and good faith on policy toward Africa and the correct view of righteousness and benefit. According to the characteristics and practical needs of the two countries, China will develop friendly and mutually beneficial cooperation in all fields with Gambia.

China is willing to enhance mutual trust with Gambia, carry out high-level exchanges in government sector, legislative institutions and political parties, and strengthen experience communication about governance and administration of state affairs and development.

China is willing to expand cooperation with Gambia. According to President Xi Jinping's proposal of "Ten Major Cooperation Plans" in the Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), China will focus on discussing bilateral mutually beneficial cooperation in six priority areas including agriculture and fishery, processing industry of agricultural and fishery products, investment and trade facilitation, infrastructure construction, human resource development and people-to-people and cultural exchanges. China supports Gambia in developing economy and improving its people's livelihood.

China is willing to enhance communication with Gambia and actively carry out exchanges and cooperation in fields like medical care, education, culture, think-tank, media, youth and women to enhance understanding and friendship between the two peoples.

China supports Gambia in playing a greater role in international and regional affairs and is willing to strengthen coordination with Gambia in international and regional issues like the United Nations.

Neneh MacDouall-Gaye expressed that Gambia-China resumption of diplomatic relations is a milestone in the bilateral relations. The Gambian government and people will firmly stick to the one-China policy, support China's cause of peaceful reunification and support the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations. Gambia is willing to be China's good friend and good partner on the basis of mutual respect for each other's sovereignty. China is an important country in the world and also a sincere friend of Africa. Gambia speaks highly of China's long-term and great assistance to Africa and its mutually beneficial cooperation with Africa. Gambia-China relations boast huge potential. Gambia is willing to vigorously develop mutually beneficial cooperation with China in fields such as agriculture, processing and manufacturing industries, trade and investment, infrastructure construction and tourism, enhance people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and actively take part in cooperation under the framework of the FOCAC.

After the talks, Wang Yi and Neneh MacDouall-Gaye, on behalf of their respective governments, signed the Joint Communiqué on Resumption of Diplomatic Relations Between the People's Republic of China and the Islamic Republic of Gambia.
