Wang Yi Holds Talks with Foreign Minister Sergey Viktorovich Lavrov of Russia

On March 11, 2016, when visiting Russia, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Foreign Minister Sergey Viktorovich Lavrov of Russia in Moscow.

Wang Yi expressed that China and Russia are the most comprehensive and preferred strategic partners to each other, and their comprehensive strategic coordination is not a makeshift but a strategic choice. No matter how the international and regional situations change, their policy to consolidate and deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination will remain unchanged, their goal for common development and revitalization will remain unchanged and their determination to defend fairness, justice, peace and stability of the world will remain unchanged.

Wang Yi expressed that as this year marks the 15th anniversary of the signing of the China-Russia Good-Neighborly Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, the two countries should take this opportunity to carry forward the peaceful idea of long-lasting friendship, cement traditional friendship, enhance political and strategic mutual trust, and deepen all-round practical cooperation so as to bring new impetus to bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination. Both countries are working together to plan and prepare high-level mutual visits and ensure fruitful results from them, to strive for early results in connecting bilateral development strategies as well as the Silk Road Economic Belt and the Eurasian Economic Union, and to actively push large-scale strategic cooperation projects such as natural gas pipeline, high-speed rail, aviation and aerospace and Far East development.

Sergey Viktorovich Lavrov said that the cooperation with China is a priority in Russia’s diplomacy, and it is in the fundamental interests of both countries to comprehensively enhance their cooperation. The two heads of state met five times last year, which greatly boosted bilateral relations. The two countries are witnessing smooth running of “Belt and Union” connection mechanism, constantly advanced practical cooperation and fruitful people-to-people exchanges. This year, Russia will work with China to keep high-level exchanges, enhance cooperation in energy, high tech, aviation and aerospace, transportation and finance and expand people-to-people and local contacts.

Both sides also exchanged in-depth views on such international and regional issues as the Syrian issue and the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue and reached extensive consensuses.

Wang Yi noted that China-Russia cooperation is embodied both in bilateral level and in their enhanced strategic coordination and positive role in international affairs. The more complicated and changeable the international situation is, the more the two countries should communicate and coordinate with each other, assuming their responsibility to maintain global and regional peace and stability. The two countries need to draw closer their cooperation in such multilateral frameworks as the G20, the SCO and the BRICS mechanisms.

Sergey Viktorovich Lavrov stated that Russia-China international cooperation features strategic coordination. The two countries deal with international issues in line with the principles and purposes of the UN Charter and with a practical attitude and are ready to further advance their coordination and cooperation in such multilateral frameworks as the UN.

Prior to the talks, Wang Yi laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
