Wang Yi: UN Security Council Resolution on the DPRK Should Be Fully Implemented
2016/03/11

On March 11, 2016, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov of Russia jointly met the press after talks in Moscow. Wang Yi said that both sides have exchanged in-depth views on the current situation concerning the Korean Peninsula and have reached broad consensus. Both China and Russia insist on the objective of denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula, and do not acknowledge the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's (DPRK) status to possess nuclear weapons; both sides support the resumption of the Six-Party Talks and are ready to make new efforts in this regard.

Wang Yi said that the UN Security Council Resolution 2270 on the DPRK should be implemented fully. Not only should the sanction measures be implemented one by one to resolutely prevent the DPRK from developing nuclear weapons, but also efforts should be made to avoid impact on the DPRK' s livelihood and humanitarian need, to avoid any actions that intensify tensions, and to work for the resumption of the Six-Party Talks. All of these are important contents in the Resolution and also represent the commitments of all members of the UN Security Council.

Given the situation, China makes the following calls. First, there should be no alternative to the implementation of the UN Resolution. Second, any unilateral sanction beyond the Resolution, since without the authorization of the UN Security Council and without the consensus from the international community, should be considered cautiously. Third, all parties should not provoke each other and should make efforts to prevent the situation from getting out of control.
