2016/03/02

On March 2, 2016, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held phone talks with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov of Russia.

Wang Yi expressed that as comprehensive strategic partners of coordination, China and Russia maintain close cooperation on major international and regional issues. During this period of time, China and Russia have conducted effective communications on the UN Security Council's approval of the new resolution on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). Both sides reached important consensus on prevention of the DPRK's further development program of nuclear missile, avoidance of war and chaos on the Korean Peninsula and protection of their own legitimate rights and interests, reflecting the high level of China-Russia strategic coordination.

Wang Yi stressed that the final way to resolve the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula is to return to the path of dialogues and negotiations. To this end, China has put forward the dual-track approach in which the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and transformation from armistice regime to state of peace proceed together. China is willing to strengthen cooperation with Russia in this regard.

Sergei Lavrov expressed that Russia speaks highly of the close coordination between Russia and China regarding the UN Security Council's new resolution on the DPRK and is willing to maintain communication with China, defend authority of the nuclear non-proliferation system and safeguard the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula.
