Li Keqiang Meets with Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah of Afghanistan

On the afternoon of December 15, 2015, Premier Li Keqiang met at the Yingbin Hotel of the Yellow River in Zhengzhou with Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah of Afghanistan who was in China to attend the 14th Prime Ministers’ Meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Member States.

Li Keqiang said that China and Afghanistan are neighbors with traditional friendship. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations 60 years ago, the two countries have been enjoying mutual understanding, mutual trust and mutual support. China will unswervingly keep up a friendly policy towards Afghanistan, support the Afghan government’s efforts to maintain national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, join hands with Afghanistan to promote bilateral cooperation in all fields and assist Afghanistan in its peaceful reconstruction, independent development, people’s livelihood improvement and long-lasting peace and security.

Li Keqiang pointed out that developing economy represents a significant approach for Afghanistan to realize security and stability. The Chinese side will encourage and support Chinese enterprises to invest in Afghanistan on the principle of mutual benefits and win-win results, boost the two countries’ economic and trade level and advance the construction of key projects; strengthen cooperation in transportation, water resources, renewable energy, human resources training and other fields; advance counter-terrorism and defense security cooperation to foster a favorable security environment; support Afghanistan to take advantage of its geographical position to actively participate in the connectivity cooperation in the region.

Li Keqiang emphasized that China supports Afghanistan’s promotion of the “Afghan-led and Afghan-owned” peace and reconciliation process, and stands ready to keep playing a constructive role in this regard. China supports the SCO to play an active role in the Afghan issue and also backs Afghanistan to actively participate in practical cooperation in all fields within the SCO framework.

Abdullah Abdullah said that China is always a reliable friend and partner for Afghanistan. China gives full play of its influence to actively promote peace talks, advance Afghanistan’s peace process and support Afghanistan’s peaceful reconstruction, which benefits regional peace and stability. The friendly cooperation between the two countries is expanding and deepening. China’s investment in Afghanistan’s transportation infrastructure, energy, hydroelectricity and other fields meets Afghanistan’s demands in developing economy and improving people’s livelihood and is of great significance. The Afghan side will make every effort to guarantee and push forward the smooth implementation of the two countries’ cooperation projects.
