Wang Yi Talks about the Outcomes of the First Foreign Ministers' Meeting on Lancang-Mekong Cooperation

On November 12, 2015, after attending the first foreign ministers' meeting on Lancang-Mekong cooperation in Jinghong City, Yunnan Province, Foreign Minister Wang Yi introduced the major outcomes of the meeting to Chinese and Foreign media.

Wang Yi noted that China and the five countries along the Mekong River are natural partners, close and friendly neighbors, sincere friends with mutual trust and brothers and sisters with mutual assistance. Today, Foreign Ministers of the six countries gathered in Jinghong City to hold the first foreign ministers' meeting on Lancang-Mekong cooperation. The meeting went smoothly and was a complete success, and all parties are exhilarated. The Foreign Ministers deeply discussed the future development direction and areas of practical cooperation of Lancang-Mekong River cooperation and yielded five major outcomes:

First, officially announced the establishment of the new mechanism: the Lancang-Mekong River Cooperation

Second, deliberated and approved the concept paper which identifies the goals, principles, major areas and mechanism framework of the cooperation.

Third, agreed to implement a batch of "early harvest" projects as soon as possible so that the cooperation can benefit regional peoples at an early date.

Fourth, agreed to hold the first leaders' meeting at the mutual convenience of all sides and at an early date next year so as to inject strong impetus to the political guidance of the future development of the cooperation.

Fifth, issued the first Joint Communiqué on the Lancang-Mekong River Cooperation to showcase the consensus and outcomes reached in the meeting.
