Liu Yandong: 2014 Marks a Harvest Year of China-US People-to-People and Cultural Exchanges

On June 24 local time, Vice Premier Liu Yandong, when attending the plenary session of the sixth round of China-US High-level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange (CPE) in Washington D.C., expressed that the year of 2014 marks a harvest year of China-US people-to-people and cultural exchanges. Both sides implemented 104 consensuses and achieved fruitful results. In the field of education, the “100,000 Strong Initiative” of the US side was overfulfilled and the US has become China's second largest source country of overseas students. Following the New York University, Duke University has also established a branch campus in China. The inter-school exchange activities among 1,000 primary schools with the theme of “Love Nature, Green Life”, which were expected to complete within three years by both sides, were fulfilled in less than a year. In the field of science and technology, China-US Young Maker Competition attracted Intel, Microsoft, ENN Goup and other famous enterprises to participate. Intel Corporation has invested 120 million yuan into Chinese universities to support "the construction of makerspace". In the fields of culture and sports, China and the US also enhanced the exchanges in museums and visual arts and other areas. NBA players and coaches went into China's universities and primary and middle schools. In the fields of the youth and women, concentrated publicity and interaction of new media for "China-US People-to-People and Cultural Exchanges and the Youth" and cooperation in leadership development of young women, health of women and children, anti-domestic violence and other areas were carried out. China and the US also fought together against the outbreak of Ebola and sent out teams of medical experts immediately. Both sides timely shared epidemic information, technical specifications and guidelines. When China's goods and materials for assistance arrived in Liberia, the US soldiers who were performing the rescue mission volunteered to help unload and transport them to the rescue sites. These touching stories and abundant accomplishments show the participation enthusiasm of people from all circles of life in both countries, manifest the unique charm and enormous potential of people-to-people and cultural exchanges and inject strong vitality into China-US relations.
