President Barack Obama of US Meets with Liu Yandong, Wang Yang and Yang Jiechi

On June 24 local time, President Barack Obama of the US met at the White House with President Xi Jinping's special representatives Vice Premier Liu Yandong, Vice Premier Wang Yang, State Councilor Yang Jiechi and other main members of the Chinese delegation who were in the US for attendance of the seventh China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED) and the sixth China-US High-Level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange (CPE).

Liu Yandong first conveyed sincere greetings and message from President Xi Jinping to President Barack Obama. Xi Jinping said in the message that over the past two-odd years since the meeting between Barack Obama and him at the Annenberg Estate, the China-US relations have scored important progress, with the fruits of China-US cooperation increasingly benefiting the people in the two countries and the world at large. He will pay a state visit to the US at the invitation of President Barack Obama this September, during which he hopes to, together with President Barack Obama, draw the blueprint for the future of China-US relations, make a strategic plan for bilateral cooperation, further deepen practical cooperation in all fields and make the two peoples more confident of and enthusiastic for the development of bilateral relations. It is a priority of China's diplomatic policies to build a new model of major-country relationship between China and the US featuring non-conflict, non-confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation. Faced with the complex and ever-changing international arena, China and the US should and could cooperation in a wide range of fields. Both sides should firmly hold on to the correct direction of bilateral relations. As long as China and the US bear the big picture in mind, respect and take care of each other's core interests, adhere to a constructive approach and avoid strategic misunderstanding and misjudgment, the differences can be controlled and managed and the common interests can be safeguarded.

Barack Obama extended gratitude to President Xi Jinping for sending a message, and asked the special representatives of the Chinese side to convey his sincere regards to President Xi Jinping, noting that he is pleased that the S&ED and the CPE have yielded fruitful results, laying a sound foundation for the state visit of President Xi Jinping to the US this September. Barack Obama said that during the meetings between President Xi Jinping and him at the Annenberg Estate and in Beijing, both sides made in-depth exchanges on development of bilateral relations. He looks forward to meeting with President Xi Jinping at the White House and further discussing on the establishment of a US-China relationship featuring long-lasting stability and fruitful results. In the past year, the US-China relations witnessed a continuous progress. Bilateral cooperation in climate change, clean energy, global public health care, economic development and a number of international and regional hotspot issues has been constantly expanded and some planned cooperation programs are gradually being implemented. He believed that President Xi Jinping's visit to the US will further promote the development of bilateral relations and cooperation, telling the people in the two countries and the world at large that the two major countries of the US and China are committed to carrying out constructive cooperation and addressing global challenges together.

Liu Yandong noted that the S&ED and the CPE this time shoulder the mission of promoting China-US mutual trust, exchanges and cooperation and preparing for President Xi Jinping's visit to the US. Under the care and support of the two heads of state, the CPE mechanism has scored more than 400 outcomes in total since its establishment in 2010, covering seven major fields including education, science and technology, culture, health care, sports, youth and women so far and playing an important role in enhancing mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples and boosting bilateral exchanges and cooperation in all fields. In the past two days, both sides realized their expected goals by having candid dialogue, making in-depth communication and focusing on cooperation. China is willing to, together with the US, earnestly safeguard and develop the mechanism, so as to uplift bilateral people-to-people and cultural exchanges to a higher level and constantly consolidate the social foundation of bilateral relations.

Wang Yang expressed that during this round of economic talks, both sides had candid and in-depth communication on major issues concerning the economy of both nations and the world, strengthened mutual understanding, and reached a number of consensus on promoting the negotiation in China-US investment agreement, addressing clime change, enhancing energy cooperation, intensifying local economic cooperation between provinces and states, cooperation within the framework of the G20 and other issues and yielded important fruits in multiple aspects. Both sides will keep close communication and prepare for the economic agenda of the meeting between the two heads of state, so as to lay a solid economic foundation for building of a new model of major-country relationship between China and the US.

Yang Jiechi said that during this round of strategic talks, both sides exchanged in-depth views on how to promote the building of a new model of major-country relationship, bilateral practical cooperation, China-US relations in the Asia-Pacific region, management of differences and sensitive issues, cooperation in major international and regional affairs and other topics, and reached a number of consensus and yielded many fruits, which conduces to enhancing mutual understanding and clearing doubts, managing differences and boosting cooperation as well as promoting China-US relations for a sustained, healthy and stable development. In the next stage, both sides will make close collaboration and good preparation to ensure President Xi Jinping's visit to the US a complete success, so as to advance the new model of major-country relationship between China and the US to a new high.
