54th AALCO Annual Session Successfully Held in Beijing

From April 13 to 17, 2015, the 54th annual session of the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO) was grandly held in Beijing. About 250 representatives from the 42 member states and seven observer states of the AALCO, the United Nations (UN) and other relevant international organizations participated in the session, including representatives of vice-ministerial level and above from 23 countries and Miguel de Serpa Soares, special representative of Secretary General Ban Ki-moon of the UN and Under Secretary General of the UN.

Premier Li Keqiang attended the opening ceremony of the annual session and delivered a keynote speech entitled "Strengthen Asia-Africa Solidarity and Cooperation to Uphold World Peace and Justice". In the speech, Premier Li reviewed the extraordinary journey over the past 60 years since the holding of the Bandung Conference, a journey on which the Asian and African countries in concerted and unyielding efforts have sought a fair and equitable international order and pursued national development and rejuvenation. He made important proposals for the Asian and African countries to continue carrying forward the Bandung spirit under the new situation and to jointly promote world peace, development, equality and justice, and announced that China will fund the establishment of a China-AALCO research and exchange program on international law. Premier Li's speech received warm responses at the session. It plays an important political guiding role for the success of the annual session and bears a long-term guiding significance for the unity and cooperation in all areas among the Asian and African countries under the new situation.

Representatives from all countries unanimously elected head of the Chinese delegation and Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin as Chairman of this session and to host the session. In a united and friendly atmosphere, representatives from all countries actively participated in the discussions and made their proposals, and reached important consensus in strengthening Asia-Africa solidarity and cooperation, jointly safeguarding post-war international order and promoting international rule of law under the new situation. The representatives had broad and in-depth exchanges of views on many important topics of international law such as the international law issues of cyberspace, counter-terrorism and violent extremism, maritime law, environment and sustainable development, achieved a batch of substantive results and passed 11 important resolutions. During the session, a special meeting commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Bandung Conference and an international seminar on "UN Charter and Post-war International Order" were held, in which Executive Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Yesui and Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin delivered keynote speeches respectively. And on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Executive Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Yesui held a welcome dinner for the representatives present at the session.

The session concluded on April 17 after a successful completion of its agenda. All countries spoke highly of the fruitful results achieved in the annual session, highly praised this session as the most successful, wonderful and memorable in the history of the AALCO, and expressed their heart-felt thanks to the Chinese government and people.
