Xi Jinping Meets with Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger of the US
2015/03/17

On March 17, 2015, President Xi Jinping met at the Great Hall of the People with former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger of the US.

Xi Jinping praised Henry Kissinger as trailblazer and witness of China-US relationship and for his important contribution to developing bilateral relationship over the past decades. Xi Jinping indicated that bilateral relationship is making important and positive progress. President Barack Obama and I successfully met in Beijing last November, and we held telephone talks not long ago, charting the course for bilateral relationship. Building a new model of major-country relationship between both countries is not only in the fundamental interests of both peoples but also conducive to peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large. China attaches great importance to bilateral relationship, and will work together with the US to elaborately care for bilateral relationship, well implement consensus reached by the two sides, strengthen exchanges at high and various levels, deepen practical cooperation in all fields and push bilateral relationship for constant development. I am looking forward to a state visit to the US within this year.

Xi Jinping stressed that China is committed to building a comprehensive well-off society and to a path of peaceful development. China’s development requires a peaceful external environment. Meanwhile, China is also a positive and constructive force in international affairs. To well handle bilateral relationship, both sides should summarize the historical experience of its development, and stick to viewing and grasping the general direction of its development on the basis of overall picture, so as to deepen mutual understanding and enhance strategic mutual trust; adhere to the principle of seeking common ground while shelving differences and mutual respect to constructively and effectively manage and control divergences and sensitive issues; persevere in the innovative thinking of win-win cooperation and jointly seize the important opportunity of bilateral relationship to further expand mutually beneficial cooperation at bilateral, regional and global levels.

Xi Jinping also briefed Henry Kissinger on the just-concluded two sessions.

Henry Kissinger expressed that as an old friend of China, he is grateful to President Xi Jinping for meeting him. China is advancing the great reform which is of historic significance. The relationship between the US and China, as an important bilateral relationship, bears on global peace, progress and development. Building the new model of major-country relationship between the US and China, a far-sighted move with emphasis on the long-term development, is in line with the interests of the two countries. He expressed his belief that President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the US this year will be of historic significance and wished the visit a success.

State Councilor Yang Jiechi was present at the meeting.
