2015/03/17

In the afternoon of March 16, 2015, President Xi Jinping met at the Great Hall of the People with President Martin Schulz of the European Parliament.

Xi Jinping expressed that this year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relationship between China and the EU. China-EU relations have scored substantial progress since the establishment of diplomatic relationship. China firmly supports the integration construction in Europe and always regards the development of Europe as an important component of the multi-polarization progress. Both China and Europe are important force in the current world and the interests of both sides are integrated in a deep manner. During my visit to the EU last year, both sides agreed to forge the four major China-EU partnership for peace, growth, reform and civilization. At present, the four major China-EU partnership for peace, growth, reform and civilization is advancing on the basis of the consensus pooled by the two sides. It is hoped that both China and the EU could join efforts to maintain high-level exchanges and expand practical cooperation by taking the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relationship as a new starting point, so as to further promote the four major China-EU partnership for fruitful results.

Xi Jinping noted that the two sessions of China, during which the work in 2015 has been comprehensively deployed and arranged, have just concluded. We will also study on the formulation of the thirteenth Five-Year Plan (2016–2020). It is believed that we will find out the converging points and new opportunities for China-EU cooperation in the new plan.

Martin Schulz noted that the EU and China now share a number of common interests and are faced with some similar problems and challenges, thus it is of great significance to consolidate and intensify the EU-China relations. The EU is ready to join hands with China to actively boost practical cooperation in various fields, so as to promote the four major EU-China partnership for new progress in a constant manner.

Vice Chairman and Secretary General of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) Wang Chen was present at the meeting.
