Li Keqiang Meets with Director-General of the World Health Organization Margaret Chan

In the morning of January 22 local time, Premier Li Keqiang met with Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Margaret Chan in Zurich, Switzerland.

Li Keqiang expressed that the Ebola epidemic has been one of the major challenges facing the international community since last year. The Chinese people, with empathy to the suffering of those in the epidemic-stricken countries, offered urgent assistance as well as organized and put into place the largest foreign aid operation in the healthcare field. China has provided several rounds of urgent fund and goods assistance and dispatched in succession hundreds of medical personnel as well as public health experts to the countries, and is helping them train healthcare and medical staff. The WHO has played an important coordinating role in fighting against the Ebola epidemic. You personally visited the epidemic-stricken areas many times, and the WHO has taken the lead under your leadership, yielding significant results in preventing and controlling the epidemic.

Li Keqiang pointed out that by taking its due responsibilities as a major developing country, China will continuously offer assistance within its capacity to the epidemic-stricken countries and their peoples, and will join efforts with the international community to help the Ebola-affected African people overcome it at an early date, and help African countries establish their own healthcare security system with a view to the post-Ebola era. The Chinese government highly values its sound cooperative relations with the WHO and will continue supporting your work and that of the WHO.

Margaret Chan highly appreciates China's important role in addressing the Ebola epidemic as well as its support and help to the epidemic-affected countries. She said that at present, it remains a big challenge to fight against the epidemic, and the international community as well as the epidemic-affected countries should join efforts for this. China's work in the previous stages has set a model and played a leading role for the international community. The WHO will further enhance cooperation with China and continuously raise attention and coordinate operation of all countries thus to achieve the ultimate success together.
