Wang Yi Holds Talks with Foreign Minister Amina Mohamed Jibril of Kenya

On January 10, 2015, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Foreign Minister Amina Mohamed Jibril of Kenya in Nairobi.

Wang Yi expressed that the Chinese side is satisfied with the status quo of China-Kenya relations and both sides have maintained frequent high-level contacts, which has played an important leading role in the sound development of bilateral relations. Both sides maintain mutual understanding and support on issues regarding each other's core interests and major concerns, further consolidating the political foundation of bilateral relations. The important consensus reached and a series of agreements signed by leaders of both countries on strengthening bilateral cooperation are implemented smoothly. Practical cooperation has scored significant progress. Last year, bilateral trade and investment grew rapidly, showing the huge potential and prospect of mutually beneficial cooperation between both countries. People-to-people and cultural exchanges show huge vitality.

Wang Yi expressed that Kenya is implementing the "look east" policy at present and China is accelerating the pace of opening up to the west. China and Kenya strengthening the synergy of respective development strategies will create a new historic opportunity for practical cooperation. The Chinese side is willing to explore the key fields and the priority of the future mutually beneficial cooperation between both sides in accordance with Kenya’s development demands and China’s condition and capability, mainly focusing on the expansion of mutually beneficial cooperation in seven major areas such as agriculture, infrastructure construction, industrial transfer and technology transfer, eco-environmental protection, renewable energy, people-to-people and cultural exchanges and peace and security so as to achieve common development.

Amina expressed that Chinese Foreign Minister selected Kenya as his first visit in the new year, vividly embodying the long-term friendship and high-level political mutual trust between Kenya and China and fully reflecting the great importance attached by the Chinese side to the development of the relations with Kenya and Africa. The Kenyan side gives heartfelt thanks to the Chinese side for offering selfless assistance and support to Kenya’s economic and social development in a long time as well as understanding and help to the promotion of peace, security and sustainable development in Africa. The cooperation in the seven major areas proposed by the Chinese side fully meets the demand of Kenya’s development and the Kenyan side hopes that the visit paid by Foreign Minister Wang Yi will add new impetus to Kenya-China cooperation in various fields. The Kenyan side will continue to strengthen mutual support and cooperation on issues regarding each other's core interests and major concerns, and constantly consolidate and develop Kenya-China comprehensive cooperative partnership featuring equality, mutual trust, mutual benefit and win-win results so as to push Kenya-China relations to a new height.

After the talks, the two Foreign Ministers together signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the establishment of the Bilateral Steering Committee between China and Kenya.
