Xi Jinping Holds Meeting with President Barack Obama of the US at Zhongnanhai, Stressing Promoting Construction of New Model of Major-Country Relationship Between China and the US with Spirit of "Accumulating Droplets to Form a Pool and Heaping Earth to Put up a Mountain"
2014/11/12

In the evening of November 11, 2014, President Xi Jinping held a meeting with President Barack Obama of the US at Zhongnanhai. The two heads of state made candid and in-depth exchanges of views on China-US relations and major international and regional issues of common concern.

Zhongnanhai in the evening saw rippling lake water and flickering tree shadows. Xi Jinping greeted Obama in front of Yingtai, and the two heads of state shook hands warmly and exchanged greetings. Xi Jinping welcomed Obama's attendance at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting in China and his state visit to China. Xi Jinping said that you have a tight schedule for this visit. We have arranged official events for the state visit as well as some relaxed occasions. I hope that you have a pleasant visit and achieve fruitful results. Obama said that he is glad to pay a state visit to China again and congratulates China on the successful hosting of the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting.

On the Yingtai Bridge, the two heads of state leant on the railing overlooking the pavilions scattered around under glorious lights. Xi Jinping briefed Obama on the history of Yingtai, which has witnessed the vicissitudes of China for centuries. Xi Jinping said that knowing the modern history of China is of great importance to understanding Chinese people's ideal today and their development path.

The two heads of state walked up the steps and held a meeting at the Hanyuan Hall.

Xi Jinping said that we held a constructive meeting at the Annenberg Estate last June, met twice in St. Petersburg and The Hague, and maintained close contacts through means such as phone calls and correspondence. I delightedly see that with joint efforts of both sides, lots of early achievements have been made in promoting the construction of a new model of major-country relationship between China and the US. People of various circles from the two countries are more approving to the concept of building a new model of major-country relationship and have higher expectations of it. President Obama's current visit to China presents an important opportunity for advancing the building of a new model of major-country relationship between China and the US. We should keep frequent and close communication and make candid and in-depth exchanges on some fundamental issues, instead of confining ourselves to the facts as they are. Only by this can we enhance mutual understanding in an all-round way, deepen mutual trust, respect each other and avoid strategic misjudgments. Both sides should expand practical cooperation, in particular push forward pioneering cooperation actively and strengthen communication and coordination in international and regional affairs, so as to promote regional and global peace, stability and prosperity.

Obama said that the US and China are two major economies in the world and both peoples are full of vitality and creativity. With deeply integrated interests, the US and China strengthening cooperation can benefit the two peoples and people around the world at large. He is willing to exchange views timely with President Xi Jinping on a wide range of issues, so as to promote the construction of a new model of major-country relationship between the US and China to a higher level continuously.

Xi Jinping invited Obama to dinner, at which the two heads of state exchanged in-depth views on governance and administration of state affairs. Xi Jinping introduced to Obama China's comprehensive deepening of reform, promoting the management of state affairs in accordance with the law, strengthening the building of the ruling party, and others. Xi Jinping stressed that China has found a development path conforming to its own national conditions, that is, the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics. We will unswervingly go along the path. China's continued stability and development are beneficial to the world, and will bring more opportunities to the US and China-US cooperation.

Xi Jinping pointed out that to understand today's China and predict tomorrow's China, one has to know China's past and culture. Modern Chinese people's thinking and the Chinese government's strategy of national governance are soaked with the gene of traditional Chinese culture. Chinese people have cherished national independence, unity and dignity since ancient times. The Chinese government must comply with the people's will, firmly safeguard national sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, maintain ethnic solidarity and social stability, and unswervingly pursue the path of peaceful development. China and the US have different national conditions, history and culture, and development paths, and stand in different development phases. The two countries should understand and respect each other, and live in harmony by focusing on similarities and allowing divergences. It is inevitable for the two countries to have some divergences, yet this is not the mainstream of the bilateral relations. Both governments should serve as stabilizers and properly handle related divergences.

Obama said that they had in-depth talks in the evening, further strengthening his understanding of China's situation as well as the governing ideas of the Chinese government and the Chinese leaders. He had a better understanding of why Chinese people cherish national unity and stability. The US is supportive to China's reform and opening-up and has no intention of suppressing or containing China, for it is not in conformity with the US's interests. The US is willing to sincerely conduct communication and dialogues with China, enhance mutual understanding, learn from each other's experience, and effectively manage and control disparities so as to avoid misunderstanding and misjudgment. China is a cooperative partner of the US. In the era of multi-polarization, the US welcomes China to play a constructive role in international affairs, and is willing to strengthen communication and cooperation with China, join hands to tackle various global challenges, and together promote peace and security of the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large.

In the gathering darkness, the two heads of state strolled to the Yingxun Pavilion to enjoy tea while chatting with great interest.

Xi Jinping stressed that the 35-year history since the establishment of the diplomatic relationship between China and the US has fully proved that a sound China-US relationship is not only in line with the fundamental interests of the two peoples, but also conducive to the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large. This is the strategic consensus jointly adhered to by the leaders of both China and the US. At present, the new model of major-country relationship between China and the US boasts a clear strategic goal, and we should make further development instead of resting on the concept and feeling content with the early achievements. We should adhere to continuously pushing forward the construction of the new model of major-country relationship between China and the US from a strategic and long-term perspective, with the spirit of "accumulating droplets to form a pool and heaping earth to put up a mountain". Obama said that the US is willing to make joint efforts with China to realize this goal.

The two heads of state will continue to hold talks on November 12 to further exchange views.

Yang Jiechi and others were present at the above activities.
